Article: Pokémon Z-A Mega Predictions!
Article
Tuesday morning, The Pokémon Company continued its Pokémon Presents series—a livestreamed presentation showcasing everything new in the world of Pokémon. Several announcements were made, including season two of Pokémon Concierge, a new stop-motion show titled Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, and PokéPark Kanto, a theme park being built on 6.4 acres in Japan.
One of the most interesting announcements came during the Pokémon Legends: Z-A promotional video. A minute and fifteen seconds into the video, a trainer deploys their Dragonite and Mega Evolves it to its brandnew Mega form with their Dragonite-ite?! Twelve years after Mega Evolution was first released, Kanto’s pseudo-legendary Pokémon will finally receive its Mega form alongside Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamence, and Garchomp!
Pokémon fans are hopeful that this won't be the only Pokémon to receive a Mega Evolution in this Generation 9 game, with many speculating that we may receive as many new Megas as were released in the Generation 3 remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which is 18.
With that being said, here are my 7 guesses for which Pokémon will receive their next boost!
1. Ledian
I’m going to start with a bold prediction - Dragonite will be the only Pokémon from Generation 1 that will receive a Mega Evolution. There are already 15 Pokémon from Kanto, so I doubt there will be even more. So, my first prediction is the Generation 2 ‘Five-Star’ Pokémon, Ledian. Developers haven’t shied away from giving power-ups to forgotten bug types; Look at Mega Beedrill and Pinsir! Ledian’s lacking stats and move pool have contributed to it being one of the Pokémon that might most desperately need an upgrade!
2. Skarmory
While Skarmory is very well known in single battles and fan-made game modes for being an amazing safe switch and hazard setter, it’s quite forgettable in practically any other context. Most players won’t use one in-game; it doesn’t get any interesting moves, and it doesn’t even have a great design! A Mega would give Skarmory a second chance at its design, increased stats to make it a true wall or offensive threat.
3. Luxray
This beloved Generation 4 electric-type has been a favorite for a Mega for over a decade at this point. It’s common for Pokémon that receive a mega evolution to receive a secondary type or change their type. Luxray has such a sinister and devious look to its dark-furred design; we’d all love to see an even more evil-looking Luxray throw off even more powerful Supercell Slams or STAB Crunches!
4. Hydreigon
Yeah, it’s a pretty cold take, but I do think the rest of the pseudo-legendaries need a Mega Evolution! While it is possible that Generation 5’s remakes could be coming soon in Generation 10, it’s somewhat unlikely that Megas will return for a second generation in a row. Hydreigon was known during the Black and White era as an extremely powerful, Choice Specs Draco Meteor user. However, since the release of the Fairy type, the Pokémon has seen practically no interest besides when Iron Jugulis, Hydreigon’s Future Paradox version released in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
