Introduction
Some video games do more than entertain—they redefine what future games can become. While many titles are successful because they refine existing ideas, a select few introduce mechanics, storytelling techniques, or technology so innovative that the rest of the industry spends years catching up. Ever since the commercial success of Pong, Games have continuously evolved in every detail. Whether that be in the past decade or the modern era, they have been a major source of entertainment for decades. I will be talking about various games from different genres, showing the sudden change within each era. I think talking about the revolutionary games that made others build on their ideas is equally important to mention, and why taking a simple concept can lead to global success with most media. For Example:

Shenmue (1999)
Shenmue was released on the Dreamcast in 1999, which played a part in revolutionizing open-world games to this day. Shenmue was the first of its kind to have a living world! Today, this is super common within open-world games like Red Dead Redemption, but back in 1999, this was something special. Every NPC within the world had a daily routine, Shops opened and closed, children went to school, making the player rely on environmental storytelling (using the NPCs for directions) Although, with such a unique concept, at that time, it wasn't a big success, reportedly costing around $50-$70 million, making it one of the most expensive games to develop at the time. Shenmue’s DNA can be seen within the Yakuza Series and the underrated game: Sleeping Dogs. Many of the mechanics introduced by Shenmue later became standard features in open-world games, demonstrating how influential the title ultimately became despite its commercial struggles.

Gran Turismo (1997)
Gran Turismo was released on the PS1 in 1997 and revolutionized simulated driving physics! Before Gran Turismo, racing games on consoles were mostly arcade experiences, for example, Daytona USA. Gran Turismo’s slogan, “The Real Driving Simulator” really holds up with its first release, introducing realistic vehicle handling through accurate suspension, drivetrain, and weight transfer simulation. These mechanics reflect the same principles that are used in real motorsports, which became unique at the time. The progression system was also revolutionary! Starting with cheap, slow cars, earning money and upgrades to unlock faster and faster cars, not like its modern counterparts of giving one or two fast cars at the start. Gran Turismo’s DNA can be seen within Forza Motorsport/Horizon and the Need for Speed series. Many mechanics of Gran Turismo later became standard features within the racing genre, particularly within the sim-racers. Gran Turismo itself has spawned a successful franchise that still utilizes simple mechanics that the very first game used.

Metal Gear Solid 2 (2001) & Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (2012)
You might be thinking, these two games are completely different from each other! And you are right, but they serve the same purpose differently: cinematic storytelling! Metal Gear Solid 2 was released in 2001 by Konami, and it's eerily relevant to this day! The story revolves around AI controlling the flow of information, digital censorship, and manipulating public opinion. Although released in 2001, many of the game's themes concerning AI, digital censorship, and manipulated information have become increasingly relevant in the modern era. Few games have explored these themes as effectively while combining them with cinematic storytelling that can capture such emotion to this day.

Cinematic storytelling is the art of translating a narrative into an immersive emotional visual experience. Fans of Metal Gear Solid 2 found the story to be oddly strange or philosophical, making the game feel more of a modern relic of a future situation rather than a video game experience.
Black Ops 2 was released in 2012 by Activision. Black Ops 2 takes place within the year 2025. At the time of 2012, fans thought the overuse of drones or AI-controlled warfare was heavily exaggerated, but nowadays it's eerily true. The game wasn’t perfectly accurate, but its core ideas of wars being fought with drones or AI which many of its predictions now seem remarkably plausible. On top of that, Black Ops 2 also has branching endings, making the game feel like your own choices matter, which in total adds up to the eerie prediction of future wars.

Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Released in 2001 by Konami for the PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2 revolutionized psychological horror by focusing on symbolism, emotion, and the player's mental state rather than relying solely on monsters or jump scares. The horror was revolutionary in a way that came from James' guilt and grief, using an abandoned town as a setting. Every monster that James encounters (like Pyramid Head) symbolises aspects of his guilt, grief, and desire for punishment. The fog itself has a symbolic meaning, exploring the unknown and trying to find answers in a derelict town. Although many horror games have attempted similar ideas, few have matched Silent Hill 2's symbolic storytelling and emotional depth. Its influence can be seen in modern psychological horror games such as Alan Wake 2, SOMA, Signalis, and The Medium.

In conclusion, although these games belong to different genres, they all share one important characteristic: they introduced ideas that were years ahead of the rest of the industry. Whether through open-world immersion, realistic driving simulation, psychological storytelling, or predictions about future technology, each title influenced the games that followed. Their lasting legacy demonstrates that true innovation is not measured by immediate success but by the number of developers who build upon those ideas in the years to come.
