Article: Nintendo Switch 2: Is It Worth it?
Article
I’ve been a gamer my entire life. The first game that I ever played was Halo 3 at my friend across the street’s house, followed by strictly Nintendo titles: Pokémon Soul Silver, Mario Kart: DS, Mario Party DS, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Pokémon Diamond, Pokémon White, and so on; therefore, I figure it’s safe to say that I grew up a Nintendo fan.
Recently, after selling my Xbox Series X for around $400 in-store credit at GameStop, I decided to pick up the Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World Bundle. After owning the console for a month now, I’d like to share my perspective on the console to inform potential buyers in KSI!
Firstly, what’s it going to cost you up front? The Switch 2 alone retails at $450, while the bundle with Mario Kart World retails at $500. Seeing as the game alone retails at $80, you’re getting a $30 discount compared to if you were to buy them separately. For comparison, the Xbox Series X console is retailing at $600, and the PlayStation 5 Slim Console Disc Edition is going for $500.
So what about games? Nintendo has not released many titles for the Switch 2 yet, but there is still a huge variety of purchasable titles such as Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Civilization VII, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Deltarune, Hogwarts Legacy, Street Fighter 6, Madden NGL 26, and more. Keep in mind, all Switch 1 games are backwards compatible with the Switch 2 as well!
In terms of the hardware, there have been several upgrades, like the screen and Joy-Cons being larger, more air vents to keep the console cooler both in handheld mode and on the docking station itself, and an additional charging port on the top of the console to make playing the Switch 2 while it's charging far more comfortable.
Mario Kart World is a fantastic entry to the MK lineup, a partially open-world game with sooooo much to do, it’s almost daunting. 195 Peach Medallions, 394 P-Switch challenges, 127 Costumes/Characters, 1,056 Stickers, 40 vehicles, 30 courses with 202 routes connecting them, and much more make MK World one of the most content-filled games in the series.
New Blue, are you sponsored by Nintendo or something? No, I wish, but no. So here’s what I think Nintendo got wrong. First, unless you are cool with playing all the games you had for the Switch 1 on a nicer console, or you want to pick up a bunch of ridiculously priced third-party games for your brand new console, it doesn’t feel like there’s enough for us to really do with this console. Perhaps if Pokémon Legends Z-A were also released with the Switch 2, it would feel like more. Another issue that I have with the console is that the battery life is actually worse than it was with the Switch 1. Since the Switch 2 is using more processing power, the battery seems to run out very quickly, meaning you can’t expect to do a lengthy gaming session without keeping it plugged in, which, in my old Chicago apartment, with like three outlets, isn't going to happen.
So, is the Switch 2 worth your money? Yes, if you are a hardcore Nintendo fan, not to mention it will become more worth it as more games are released. If you are Nintendo-curious, maybe! I think if this article made you think about picking one up, you should! If not, don’t. It's a large investment for a console with so few first-party titles!
