With AI on the rise especially in the past few years and becoming main stream in 2024 with the introduction of ChatGPT and other large language models it has been used as a tool for most to help write essays, get easy recipes and other harmless things however when it comes to gaming AI has affected the gaming industry for the worse. The biggest example of this is how AI was used to develop Call of Duty Black Ops 6, AI use in this game was used to create promotional art, help with map creation and other miscellaneous things. Now on the surface it seems harmless and could be seen as a positive thing because it’s more ‘efficient’ however AI has taken over the jobs of 2D graphic artists and are now currently threatening the jobs of voice actors.
The recent SAGAFTRA (The biggest voice actor union) strikes show that AI is not beneficial for gaming and is instead the complete opposite. Voice actors have gone on strike all across the world because of lack of AI protections within their contract meaning the gaming companies like Microsoft, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft and other large companies have tried to use their likeness and voices to train AI to do the job of voice acting meaning that voice actors won’t have a job anymore.
2D designers and level designers are also at threat of AI, recently Activision Blizzard have been using AI ‘slop’ to make promotional art and in game items (sometimes paid items). The biggest example of this is the ‘Necroclaus’ loading screen which featured Santa Claus as a zombie with 7 fingers....
