Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Review: Cold War, but with a twist. The highly anticipated launch of BO6 is finally here and after two weeks more and more people are jumping into the action with Call Of Duty’s newest entry. So here is an in depth article of what features are new, old and returning for those looking to omni-slide into the action. To start off, this wouldn’t be a Call of Duty if it doesn’t have a campaign (Sorry BO4), Black Ops 6’s campaign is all about the Gulf war, but things aren’t as it seems when the story goes off track when a secret underground organisation called “Pantheon” is unearthed. During the campaign it is your job to take down Pantheon but along the way you realise things aren’t as they seem. The Cradle is introduced to you in one of the first few missions as a virological weapon created during research by Pantheon to create super soldiers. During Pantheons research to create super soldiers they experimented with power enhancing drugs, mind control and other forms of “medicine”, the result was a virological weapon known as “The Cradle”. There were only two soldiers who appeared to have resistance to the cradle and one of those people is Case which is the character you play as during the Campaign. Things to note about this campaign is that it features open world missions which were first made popular in the previous instalment (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III), it also featured a Safehouse which was first showcased in Black Ops Cold War however, Black Ops 6’s Safehouse is very different, instead of it being an abandoned storage unit it’s actually a whole mansion with secrets and even features a whole side Easter egg for those with more of a keen eye. The Safehouse also has an upgrade feature where for cash that you obtain through the missions you can buy a firing range, a weapons bench and much more. Less linear missions are also at play with this campaign with one mission where your goal is to go undercover during a presidential convention and for those who have already played the campaign might’ve noticed that during this mission in the background the music playing is actually Snakeskin Boots from Shadows of Evil, a Zombies map from Black Ops III. Overall Black Ops 6’s campaign has a lot to offer for its hardcore player base but also its casual one, the playtime is round the 8 hour mark and according to IGN it scores a 9/10 however, in my personal opinion it scores a 7.5/10 and it is definitely the best campaign since Cold War. Next up is the Multiplayer, this iteration of Call of Duty brings a lot of innovation to its core experience and its main selling point is a new feature called Omni-Movement. Omni- Movement is a new feature allowing players to sprint, dolphin dive, slide and move in any direction, so gone are the days where you’re prone and get shot in the back, this year truly is the year of the movement sweats. During CoD Next Treyarch announced that BO6’s maps will only be small and medium with no large maps in the rotation, they also stated that three lane maps will be the norm however it seems like they strayed away from that quickly. Black Ops 6’s maps aren’t the traditional three lane maps we have come to expect with a Call of Duty, they’re more similar to the formula used in MW2019 sparkling a lot of controversy. The gunplay is very solid and is very similar to previous iterations of the franchise however the new Omnimovenent takes gunplay and gunfights to a whole new level with its more advanced movement system. Scorestreaks make a return and are thankfully back to the traditional system instead of the system used in Black Ops Cold War. 33 completely new guns were added with the release of Black Ops 6 meaning there is much more variety and customisation within the loadouts. 99% of guns seem to be on an even playing feild with each gun serving a different purpose with different pros and cons like the Tanto .22 which features a slow fire rate but a high DPS making the gun high risk, high reward. However, some guns have excelled and have become the “META” (Most Effective Tactic Available) these guns include the AEK 973 which is a fast firing three round burst marksman rifle capable of one bursting in the body even at long ranged and the Jackal PDW with its fast fire rate and low recoil. The base gameplay of Multiplayer however is more similar to Cold War’s but just with better movement, so if you enjoy Cold War you will more than likely enjoy Cold War. There have been a lot of good changes within Black Ops 6’s Multiplayer however, there are still the same core systems in place such as SBMM & EOMM. Skill Based damage has caused a lot of uproar within the community however definitive proof of Skill Based damage is minimal and most of the proof can be put down to high ping, desync or packet burst. With all that said I do believe that Black Ops 6’s Multiplayer is one of the better iterations we have received in the Modern CoD era (MW2019 onwards) and I think it is deserving of a 6.9/10 (see what I did there?) It wouldn’t be a Black Ops game if it didn’t feature the iconic and fan favourite mode, Zombies. Black Ops 6’s Zombies mode starts off with Terminus, the prison on a remote island in the Philippines that Requiem was sent to at the end of Forsaken. Peck makes a comeback this time acting as a protagonist however his intentions are unclear. The maps is all about uncovering the secret experiments that were taking place here by Project Janus. Along the way you realise that Dr. Modi a scientist with a reputation of doing really bad things has stolen Pecks Aetheriumed missiles and the goal is to retrieve them and escape the island. The base gameplay of Black Ops 6’s Zombies is extremely similar to Cold War’s Zombie mode but with some very big changes. The point system remains the same from when it was implemented in Cold War with 90 points for a base kill, 115 points for a headshot and 105 for a melee kill. Amour returns but instead of you buying from Ivan the dummy it has been made a wallbuy for 4000 points for the Tier II armour and 10000 for the Tier III armour. Other gameplay elements also return in Black Ops 6 including its loadout system, its pack a punch system and the health based system. Super sprinters (not as fast as those Verruckt sprinters) also make a comeback after round 55 or whenever you turn on the Rampage Inducer. But that’s not all, there’s a second map that launched with Black Ops 6 called Liberty Falls, this map is set in the peaceful town in the middle of West Virginia however the town has more than was can be seen, underneath the town is a secret Project Janus laboratory which unearthed the Outbreak at Liberty Falls. Although on launch this map became the fan favourite for its casual and laid back atmosphere that wasn’t always the case, during CoD Next Treyarch showed off Liberty Falls and the backlash it received for its generic look and having “no aura” was insane. No Zombjes map has ever received that much backlash since TranZit and Die Rise back in 2012. Although the zombies mode was plagued with negative opinions and ridicule it has still become one of the most successful launches of a Call off Duty Zombjes of all time rivalling that of Black Ops 3 and Black Ops Cold War. The best way to describe Black Ops 6’s zombies is by describing it as a mechanical masterpiece, every single bit of the game feels fluid and responsive and the flesh issue that was in Cold War has all but disappeared in this new iteration, it really is what Cold War should have been. So you may ask yourself, is Black Ops 6 worth the $70-100 price tag? As per every Call of Duty release they all have their flaws and weaknesses (Look at Vanguard and MWII) but they all in one way or another have have a certain charm to them, they all have special features and even though Activision wants to paint this game as a brand new game with super innovative features it really is just another modern Call of Duty. But none of that matters when the game is free for Game Pass users and when it’s a free game then there really isn’t any harm in downloading it and trying it out for yourself. Overall I would personally rate Black Ops 6 a 7.5/10, it is probably one of the better CoDs in the Modern era (2019 Onwards) and if you liked Cold War then you would definitely love Black Ops 6
