Hollow Knight: Silksong — An Upward Push Like a Sequel With A Game Theory That’s Rehearsed

Until now, neither in the recent indie games had teased an audience of such size as closely as Hollow Knight: Silksong. The original from Team Cherry was beloved for its sequel and was greatly anticipated, so while I was very excited to hear the ending, frankly, Silksong does the most of what Team Cherry was doing and builds on it.

A New Hero, A New Kingdom

This time, the battle becomes a duel played with Hornet, the speedy yet powerful princess-guardian of the original game and a beloved fan favorite. Hornet, in contrast, shines at so many levels beyond that hushed stony Knight; she charges the scene with character and mission. Her progression through the mysterious kingdom of Pharloom is more forward-looking, more pointed but never ultimately limited. It’s a beautifully shaped world, Pharloom — and one very much a piece with its own kind of verticality, detail and refined level of verticality because of the variety of places where its biomes and its plants and animals live. Mossy ruins, gilded citadels decorated in ornate design, where there is this sense that the space has things distinct, alive and, perhaps most of all, purposeful, and that this space has been built in the best way possible as a reward for discovery.

Combat That Dances

And combat in Silksong moves faster and more acrobatically than ever. Hornet’s needle-and-thread style of fighting is very versatile for fluid movement, wide range, and nice combos. Tool creation and craftable abilities provide an opportunity for player to tailor their playstyle or get the player to experiment with other playstyles. Boss fights are the signature element of the series once again, and they're also stand-out. They are hard but fair, and they want precision, timing and adaptability. Every transaction somehow seems more like an exquisitely arranged duel than a grinding endurance test.

A More Dynamic Progression System

It’s perhaps the quest system that’s the most radical shift. But NPCs nowadays seem to require that a player meet precise, objective goals, one for which he or she would be doing better in a defined way for a more sensible set of goals. If not, then at least the excitement of exploration. This slight revision suggests to players that there is a sort of journey somewhere for some type of goal with this type of thing but without sacrificing the signature feel of “lost in a beautiful world” to keep playing. The crafting system also comes with new strategic opportunities. Collecting the tools and making the construction adds depth to the gameplay without taking away from it.

Art and Atmosphere

Silksong is visually beautiful. That hand-drawn art style does have even more nuance and animation fluidity. Environments are filled with more complex atmospheres, enemies are far more expressive, and the end result is much more polished. The soundtrack was such a perfect match, combining eerie track with vibrant battle-loving themes. It illuminates the quiet moments of inquiry but also forces of combat's raw, brutal nature.

Performance and Polish

Load performance is mostly smooth and responsive at launch with very few technical glitches. Load times are light; the vast majority of distributions retain the frame rate of the game. Minor bugs can be easily discovered and never bring negative effects on the game.

Final Verdict

Hollow Knight: Silksong won’t succeed because it reshapes the wheel, for instance, but because it tries to refresh it. It actually does help elevate the things that the original has done for the game yet even more, providing some real changes without taking the game away from them. A best seller is no brainer for a first-time player. For newbies, it’s one of the greatest things there has ever been to make in Metroidvania — it’s incredibly challenging, yet incredibly lovely and incredibly rewarding.

Score: 9/10

Silksong is a masterclass in sequel design and teaches us to keep doing it because the most important thing in life is to just hit the nail on the head when it comes to what you’ve nailed already.
